Illumina is a leading developer of life science tools focussed on integrated systems for large-scale analysis of genetic variation and function. We serve research and clinical customers in a broad range of markets including oncology, reproductive health, agriculture, complex disease and microbiology. Illumina is a global company with its global headquarters based in San Diego, California, USA, and our Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) headquarters based in Cambridge.
Scientists working in Cambridge are part of a global research and development team driving innovation of sequencing technology and advancing the use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for the benefit of patients. The Illumina Laboratory Services team on Campus is working in partnership with Genomics England and the NHS to support the Genomic Medicine Service, with a goal of delivering 300,000 clinical genomes over 5 years from our accredited laboratory. Illumina’s technology is also supporting the UK Biobank and Wellcome Sanger Institute sequencing facility.
Our mission
Our mission is to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome. Our team based here on Campus was set up to deliver the 100,000 Genome Project, which was completed in Dec 2018, working together with Genomics England. This project demonstrated the value of whole genome sequencing in transforming healthcare for patients with rare and undiagnosed genetic disease and cancer. This was one of largest sequencing initiatives across the world, truly unlocking the genome.
Our challenge
We now have the ability to sequence at an unprecedented scale. Collectively, this will give us a much deeper understanding of genetics than ever before and we can begin to unlock the power of the genome. This project has deliver more precise and personalised healthcare, driving benefits for patients now and in the future. The next challenges are scaling of the end-to-end solutions for rapid delivery of clinical reports to doctors and integration with care within the NHS.
What we do
As a provider of innovative technology our company is an exciting place to be. Our portfolio spans from small, benchtop sequencers accessible for all, to those intended for the generation of clinical whole genome sequence (cWGS) rapidly and at high-scale. We are enabling our customers, including those based here on Campus, to read and understand genetic variations. Discoveries that were unimaginable even a few years ago are now becoming routine and making their way into patient treatment.
Our achievements so far
The 100,000 Genome Project was delivered at the end of 2018 in our ISO15189 accredited laboratory. The laboratory team on campus has continued to support whole genome sequencing to extend the proof of concept for a broader range of cancers. Also, since April 2020 we have utilised our infrastructure to help understand the role that host genetics may play in disease severity for covid-19 patients. Genomics is one of the key elements in the NHS Long Term Plan, driving towards more rapid and precise diagnoses, more effective and tailored treatments and improved patient outcomes. Our team is now in preparation to support the Genomic Medicine Service for the NHS, the first national healthcare system to adopt whole genome sequencing into clinical practice.
